Update. [02 Dec 2004|11:51pm]

[ mood | crazy ]

Hey everyone. Seems like we've all been so busy reading the books that no one has posted! Haha

Anyway, I did some changes to the user info and layout. The layout is whatever-y so please tell me what you like, what you hate and what you want to see done. Thanks for the input! :)

P.S: Are we all reading the books? How do you like them so far? I haven't gotten through much of House of Leaves, but I love it and its wierdness.

Important Updates... [22 Oct 2004|10:12am]

There has been a lot of confusion as to which day our first meeting will be. It is very important that you vote in this poll as it will be the final determination for when our meeting will be.

Poll #370922 Our Meeting

Which days can you make it to our meeting? PLEASE CHECK ALL THAT APPLY as we will choose the day that most people can make it to.

THIS SATURDAY, October 23rd
THIS SUNDAY, October 24th
NEXT FRIDAY, October 29th
NEXT SATURDAY, October 30th
NEXT SUNDAY, October 31st

After we choose a day, we will make another poll or have a discussion to choose where, which restaurant and which movie we will be going to. I know there has been a lot of wishy-washyness but we want to make sure that everyone can make it and all the members are happy.

Also, has anyone talked to SOC about our becoming an official club?

And lastly, I'm working on a new, spiffy layout, and that will be up soon. :)

"Get F'd in the A on Saturday" -Southpark [18 Oct 2004|08:06pm]

Alright everyone,

Saturday is the first official meeting of FIU's unofficial book club. Since a few of you are plans for later that night, I think that we should meet at TGI Fridays at Dolphin Mall in the early afternoon (2ish-3ish). We'll have lunch/dinner (linner?) and get to know each other. Feel free to invite your friends, but make sure not to bring along any midgets.

After that we can head over to Barnes and Nobles and make the official decision on the book. After that, if you guys want, we can head over to see Team America: World Police, here are the showtimes:

(shit, there are no showtimes for Saturday yet. I'll update this post when they become available.)

If you guys have any problems, let me know. You can e-mail me at TheMagicToenail@gmail.com or just AIM me. My AIM name is "LuisNinSuperstar".

If you guys have problem with the time, just let me know, we'll see what we can do.

If you're planning on going to the event make sure to RSVP by commenting on this post.

Hey peoples.

My name is John, 23yrs old, books are my passion. I can whiz thru books like most people drink water. Im a senior at south campus. My major is International relations and I would have posted an introduction earlier but my computer is busted. My favorite authors include Terry Goodkind, RA Salvatore, Orson Scott Card, David Eddings, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert E. Howard, and many others cant think of their names. I spend most of the time in high school reading the librarian who was always yelling to everybody was really nice to me.

Intro's... i dont know why, but here goes [16 Oct 2004|12:51pm]

[ mood | awake but barely ]

Hello everyone.

I read when i am bored. I have staved off most other forms of pop communication to this end as well and thus made reading my sole connection to pop culture, news media, political propaganda, and the world in general. Before i go off topic and describe why i did this, let me proceed with what i read. I tend to stick with fiction, reading for me is an escape from the mundane simplicities of every day life, i seek adventure and intrigue through books and not political or social drama which can be found in countless other facets of every day life for me and likely you as well. I just finished Dan Brown's Deception Point (same day i started it), and quite frankly i liked it infintely more than his Davinci Code or Digital Fortress. I tend to tear through books when im interested and here is my current pile of books to read, in this order:

Justine - Lawrence Durell
The Doom Books (All 4 of em)
The Fall - Albert Camus
The Gunslinger - King
Men Are from Mars, Women are from Venus - Gray
Merrick - Anne Rice

I started the latest book by opening the file and starting to read while bored at work, then finished it off because i was already 30 chapters in. Most of you mentioned authors names i am familiar with so reading the suggested should be easy work. Some of you may also know my terrible humor and often offensive wit, i'll try and keep myself in check for the sake of us all =).

Finally i am all about libraries and thus practically refuse to buy a book or frankly anything that can be otherwise obtained, for me it adds to the personal value if i didnt buy it (I'll spare you further explanation). My name is Mark, you can check my LJ info for contact and interest details.

Hi, I'm Mercy :) I'm 19 and I'm on my second semester here at FIU but I think I have sophomore standing. I'm an Art major (focus on Photography) and while I would've preferred to do English, I can't stand all the assigned reading and the analyzing.

Hey everyone. Another introduction....

My name is Kathleen (or Kat or Kathy, whatever you like). I'm a freshman and double-majoring in information technology and mass communications (though which communications route I'm unsure of).

I love to read as much as I can. It makes me feel like I'm helping my brain rather than shrinking it with TV. I like to read because it makes me see the world in different ways, and I want to be able to understand my surroundings as much as I can.

I have a big problem though--I have a short attention span! Many times I'll be completely captivated by a book and halfway through it I just stop and start reading another one! Hopefully this club will help me with that.

I don't have one favorite book. Everytime I read a new one, it becomes my fravorite. Some of the ones I enjoyed the most, though, are Catcher in the Rye, Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Fountainhead (half of it :( ) and the Mysterious Stranger.

Right now I'm reading Love at Goon Park and A Seperate Peace.

I like to own every book I read, but with Amazon, I get all my books for a buck and that's great! :D

I also like to write and am hoping to become part of the Beacon staff. 'Tis all. Bye!

[ mood | reading... ]

So, what's the verdict? Have we decided on where we're having the dinner? And a time? Just curious...

Well I started reading Incubus Dreams by Laurell K. Hamilton today, and I haven't put it down. I think I'll be done in a week. But then I'll have nothing to read, so we better pick a book soon!

For Writers [15 Oct 2004|01:48pm]

[ mood | chipper ]

I do know some people both read and write, so I would like to offer up some writing fun that will be taking place next month.

Nanowrimo!! (national novel writing month)

for the month of november, participants will write a 50,000 word novel from start to finish. It's more or less about actually sitting down and writing than writing something amazing. also networking with friends and such is amazing. i encourage all writers to try it out and if anyone wants, i'm sure i'll share whatever i've worked on.

OOOH YEAH. XD [15 Oct 2004|01:21pm]

[ mood | amused ]

Hello friends, i'm Melissa Malice (yes, you can call me that -- no,it's not my real last name.) and i'm nearly 21. I live here at lovely fiu south. (oh! delicious!) and also am the public relations officer for the anime club we have on campus.

i'm a loud...silly...dork!

ok! i'm an english and women's studies major and i hope to something i'm almost done with school. i read and write both fiction an poetry. i'll read anything as long as it's not terribly boring. at this moment i'm a large fan of cyberpunk novels and am in the midst of reading Neuromancer by William Gibson. i'll be moving onto Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson after that. I do have problems with concentrating on things sometimes, but recently i've been in the reading zone, so i'm going to run with that.

some of my favourite books are perks of being a wallflower, catcher in the rye, good omens, the billy chaka series (tokyo suckerpunch, hokkaido popsicle, dreaming pachinko and soon to be kinki lullaby when my signed copy arrives *squeaks*), bloodsugar and dogrun. authors would be arthur neresessian, issac adamson, neil gaiman and poets would be nicole blackman and ts eliot.

someone mentioned manga, well yes -- i'm probably one of the largest manga nerds ever. at the moment my favourite is death note even if it's not available in the us. i will give you this lovely link: http://elev.ru.orebro.se/ru0364/dn/ to gather some for yourself if you're interested in that.

my aim name is HERBLOODYREMAINS ; i'm sorry if i don't respond, i have the bad habit of moving away from the computer. feel free to add me to your friends list or im me and such. i'm always up for making friends.

edit: i'll also try and make us a really sweet icon. let me know if anyone has any ideas!
